Draft Day – יום גיוס

Suggested Packing List For Base

This is a basic packing list for your first time going to base. Each person will develop their own packing habits throughout their service.

Tips For Draft Day & Day 1 In The IDF:

Written by Ben B, Tzevet Mikey Alumni.

  1. Arrive well rested. There’s a lot of standing around and being tired will not make life easier.
  2. Have 2 emergency contacts in Israel on hand, written down on a small piece of paper – you’ll be asked for it a million times! Make sure to have their phone numbers & home addresses!
  3. Have your bank information & any other paperwork such as your rental contract for your apartment in a folder, ready.
  4. Be prepared to wait around… A lot!
  5. You won’t have your phone and will not be allowed to smoke.
  6. Make sure the boots/uniform that you receive fit and if it doesn’t ask for a different size. They’ll always tell you that it fits – don’t leave the room until it actually fits.
  7. Ask questions if you don’t know. Don’t be scared to ask.
  8. When you’re on the bus on the way to base, charge your phone.
  9. Try to memorize your מספר אישי (army identification number) as soon as you receive it – this will make your next few hours way way easier.
  10. If you want a ptor zakan פטור זקן (approval to keep your beard), ask for one at Bakum (the draft center).
  11. Pay attention to what your מפקדים (commanders) say and follow their instructions. In my experience they are sensitive to the fact that you’re still learning but they want to see you making an effort.
  12. Join & train with Tzevet Mikey. You’ll be less confused and more prepared than many others drafting alongside you.
  13. Be excited, ignore the annoying parts and most importantly, keep a positive attitude.

Draft Day FAQ

What should I wear on draft day?

Wear something comfortable. Be aware that one of the first stations on draft day is to receive your IDF uniform. From the moment you put on your uniform, until the moment you go home you will likely not have another opportunity to wear your “civilian clothes” other than pajamas for sleep or sports clothes for exercise.

Pro tip – Your pajamas and sports clothes should be interchangeable, that way you pack less and carry less.

Will we be going home for the first weekend after drafting?

Usually yes, but there is no way to know for certain. During Corona, there were soldiers that drafted and stayed on base for almost 2 months before being released home.

Pro tip – Always pack for 3 weeks on base. And you can never have enough socks.

Will I be able to switch an item (uniform pants, boots, etc) for a different size after draft day?

Technically, yes but it might take months! On draft day, make sure that you try on everything that you receive. Not the right size? Don’t leave the station/room until you receive the proper size, especially with your boots! It’s a nightmare to change sizes afterwards and you don’t want to be walking around in boots/pants/etc that are too small/big
